Every time my computer starts up I get the message, "To free up disk space
outlook express can compact messages" Problem is, I don't even use Outlook
Express, I use Outlook 2007. I know how to stop the message from coming up,
by going into the registry and resetting the counter but, what I would like
to do is solve the problem, what is this doing this.

That message is issued by Outlook Express, not by Windows. So you have
OE getting loaded when Windows starts up. Use msconfig.exe or
SysInternal's AutoRuns to find out where you added OE to the list of
startup items. Maybe you put a shortcut to OE in your Start -> Programs
-> Startup folder.
If you are using the Fisher-Price Welcome screen on Windows startup that
shows how many e-mails are waiting in your mailbox, it uses whatever is
designated as the current (default) MAPI client. Make sure you have
selected Outlook to be your default e-mail client, not OE.
I had the same problem. MSFT Windows Search Desktop is calling Outlook
Express from a script. I tried to delete the call, but didn't work(not a pc
pgmr).
Solution: I found two extra copies of "Windows Search" short cut in
c:\doc..&set..\all users\start menu\programs. and one in same plus "startup"
folder. I delete both of them from "all users" and the problem went away.
I hope this also fixes my startup problem. A few times my dell dem 8400
stalls during power on and IPL from account setup to login account, the last
thing I see in "Search Desktop" on the lower tool bar. I know later this
week.

I appreciate that this is an MS Office Outlook forum... however this is what came up when I typed in the annoying message that appeared everytime I started my computer.
I use Outlook - have never installed OE and was thinking I had a virus maybe.
Removing the shortcuts from the All Users did stop my problem but now I realize there is an "official" way to stop it.
It is related to desktop search - right-click the magnifying glass icon in the toolbar menu and choose Windows Desktop Search Options from the menu.
If Microsoft Outlook Express is listed under 'Included Locations' then left-click on it and click on the 'Modify' button'. You should see an Indexed Locations popup where you can 'uncheck' the Microsoft Outlook Express: Main Identity entry and you will no longer receive the message.
It's a shame this option is set as a default.
I'm glad I found the solution even it is in the 'wrong' forum.
Since I do not have Outlook Express installed at all (Windows Components), getting this message means it obviously is coming from somewhere else. Taking the lead on the Windows Search, I instead looked to see if that might be sticking its little fingers where they don't belong. Sure enough. I suspect this will resolve the problem.
If you're using Windows Search, right click the System Tray icon, select Windows Search Options. When the Indexing Options dialog box appears, click the Modify button at the bottom. Find Microsoft Outlook Express in the list, clear the check box, click OK. Microsoft Outlook Express should no longer appear in the "Index these locations:" list. Close the dialog box.
After changing Windows Search Options, you may still have to reset the OE count. Even though Windows Search is no longer looking at OE, OE has already opened the 100 times to give you this message.
Try this:
Edit the registry manually to reset the counter manually:
1. Close Outlook Express and all message windows.
2. Click Start, click Run and type without quotes "regedit".
3. Navigate to this key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlo ok Express\5.0
where GUID is the long number used for your Identity.
4. In the right-hand pane, double-click "Compact Check Count", then change the value to zero.
5. Close regedit and restart your computer.
This worked for me and the message is now gone. And Windows Search is no longer taking up the count in OE.

I had the same problem. Turns out it was Microsoft Search indexing Outlook Express (don't know when that got turned on, but I'm pretty sure it was on a windows update.) It's easy to fix, but I put together step-by-step instructions if you have any trouble figuring it out. http://blog.lucidtechgroup.com/2009/03/outlook-express-to-fr ee-up-disk-space.html
This is coming from Windows Search, if you shut it down, then restart it. Every time it starts you get the same message.
Right Click on the search in the taskbar and choose Windows Search Options. You can remove it from the search locations, but the message still comes up.
Now that I know where it came from, I just let it do the search (press OK). We will see how long till it comes up again.
There is a troubleshooting guide here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771814.aspx
1. Right-click Start button.
Choose Properties from popup menu.
Choose Start Menu tab.
Click "Classic Start Menu" radio button and choose the Customize button.
Click the Remove button.
Click on "Outlook Express" to highlight it.
Click Remove button.
2. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
Remove Windows Live Search.
