Last month I got a new HP desktop with Win 7 32 bit. I did a full install of Office 2003 professional and set up my IMAP account with Google. It works fine. Yesterday I signed up for another webmail account (not Google) and wanted to use Outlook to also pull down messages from it. I did the normal setup from within OUTLOOK and I know I have all the correct parameters but as soon as I click on MORE SETTINGS or NEXT, I get an error message "The requested operation failed". I then closed OUTLOOK, went to CONTROL PANEL/MAIL and set it up there, but when I came back into OUTLOOK it still did not work. It is there if I go to TOOLS, EMAIL ACCOUNTS but again I cannot do anything with it. I took the same information to another computer with Office 2003 professional and was able to setup both the Google and non-Google IMAP accounts. I tried the DETECT and REPAIR option under HELP. No luck. Any ideas as to what might be wrong? I have done a bunch of searching but have not found a solution, and I hate the idea of removing and reinstalling OUTLOOK due to the customization I already did. BUT even after doing it (complete removal and use of the MS OFFICE cleanup tool and a full install of OFFICE) it still fails. Thanks in advance for any ideas!
I got no replies from anyone and I have posted for help on 3 different forums including the MS one. What a bummer.
Here is some more information about this problem and what I have tried yesterday. After restoring my image I again did a REMOVE of OFFICE 2003 and ran the office removal tool. I also removed Windows Mobile. I then went into the PROGRAM FILES folder only to find out that there were still many files there. I deleted them. I then did a REGEDIT and searched for OUTLOOK and OFFICE. Well, the removal tool MS provides does not do a good job at all. There were MANY KEYS and DATA for OUTLOOK and OFFICE that were not removed but, from what I could tell, were definitely not associated with other programs. I tried my best to delete as many as possible. After rebooting I went ahead and installed OFFICE from scratch, full installation. Despite all the effort, I still could not add another IMAP account -- I still get the same error. And if I delete the current-working IMAP account and try to add the new IMAP account, it does not work. THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING.
The last thing I tried was to load OFFICE 2010 BETA. I used the UPGRADE option. Guess what -- IT DID ALLOW ME TO CREATE THE SECOND IMAP account! But, I had multiple crashes of OUTLOOK as I tried to move from one account to another. Since it is BETA, I don't know if is the program or issues associated with OFFICE 2003. I just cannot believe that MS has no answer for this problem.
I have tried to create a new profile, I have tried to make the new IMAP account from MAIL in the CONTROL PANEL, I have tried to make the new IMAP account the default. Something is locking the ability to create a new account or change the existing one...
UPDATE: Exit OUTLOOK and find the icon. Right click and go to properties. Click on the COMPATIBILITY tab. Is "RUN IN COMPATIBILITY MODE" checked? Uncheck it and see if it fixes your problem. It did fix mine!
