Outlook and AOL Error 554 [message #94474] Tue, 05 December 2006 06:11 Go to next message

Outlook has been working like a dream as my mailer to AOL Broadband until
yesterday since when every attempt to send a message (reply or original
thread) is rejected with error code 554.

Other than adding a few new contacts, I have consciously done nothing to
change settings.

I have re-visited the settings and validated these with no change to the
result.

AOL's software still works, but I'd prefer to be back under Outlook (where
my personal fimes and history are).

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

SMTP error 554 is a generic error meaning "transaction failed" and it can be
caused by a number of things. Try enabling diagnostic logging and see if
that ghives additional information.

Kathleen,

Thanks for your question.

I am able to send using the "AOL" proprietary client and have now succeeded
in sending a few mails through Outlook again. I think that this mirrors some
short term success yesterday and I expect that Outlook will seem to be
blocking outgoing mails again shortly after whetever condition causes the
problem returns.

I'll send you further detail as and when this happens: But I promise you the
error code was 554. Lots of times.

Thanks again

Peter.

I'll take a log next time it happens. After two days of misery, the issue has
"cleared itself". I have re-sent a couple of mails that were giving me a
problem. I suspect that a condition MAY have been set up by an unread mail
with an attached request for acknowledgement of receipt. I did change the
SMTP parameters in the e-mail account from "use the same settings as incoming
mail" to definition of those same conditions (changing the selected button).
But if this changed anything, I really don't see why!
Thanks for your suggestions. Fingers crossed.

I have had exactly the same, intermittent problem - it usually recurs for
several days with no warning and then reverts to normal service for no
apparent reason. Did you ever get to the underlying cause? (needless to say,
AOL's technical support has been completely unhelpful on this)

Andy,

Thanks: as you say, the problem just "went away" after a couple of days,
with no comment from anyone. I originally suspected a combinmed conmdition
including arrival of e-mails with required confirmation of receipt, but that
has worked fine since.

Cheers

Yes, and add me to this list. I use outlook 2003 for AOL address, then for
some reason I get error 554 transaction failed--only on my replies or
messages I send. My incoming works just fine. this happened last week for 4
days, then stopped and has worked fine all week, now it is back at it.

Any suggestions for how to permanently fix this?

Same intermitent problem with me, too (all outgoing mail to port 587 bounces
back with error 554). AOL claims its not their problem, but nothing on my
machine has changed and, in the past, the problem has gone away after some
time. Somebody must have some insight to this.

My name is Bill M. and I have the same problem with the intermitent ability
to send emails from aoutlok using my wmacc99@aol.com address. Is the answer
to dump AOL? This is very frustrating and embarrassing.

I think I figured out a work-around, or maybe the underlying reason, having
to do with AOL Image Puzzle.

In Outlook, turn on logging (Tools | Options | Other | Advanced Options |
Enable Logging). Try to send something via AOL; then examine the log
("opmlog.log" ). I noticed that the failure occurs when Outlook fails to
answer AOL's Image Puzzle. (By contrast, go to mail.aol.com and send an
e-mail. See how AOL requires you to answer the Image Puzzle.)

The work-around is to do exactly that, once anyway (that is, go to
mail.aol.com and send an e-mail). That seemed to end the problem for me, at
least for now.

Be sure afterward to turn off Outlook logging.

I've also screwed around with the outgoing server (AOL says to use 587) but,
for now, 25 seems to be working fine. Beats me why.

Good luck.

Just a word of caution. NEVER post your real mail address in a newsgroup
unless you WANT spam and viruses.

I started having this exact problem today - have used Outlook flawlessly for
my AOL acct and suddenly today I could not send any emails from outlook - I
could send directly from within AOL. I just tried this work around (went to
mail.aol.com - sent a test message - it asked me to type in what I saw on the
screen - and then told me I could now send mail). After that, the problem
was fixed and I can send mail from outlook again. I did not have to change
any other settings. Thank you for figuring this out!!

Thankyou so much for posting this - I encountered the exact same problem
today, had no help whatsoever from AOL, but this post has completely solved
my problem.
Am contacting AOL again to feed back to them - I knew it was an AOL problem
and they would not accept it!

Many thanks for the solution. I too wasted 30 minutes on the phone talking to a moron. He firstly wanted to know what router I was using (why?), so we then get into the unsupported router thing. Next he couldn't get round the fact that I haven't got that cr*p AOL s/w installed. He couldn't get past telling me to uninstall & reinstall. Things got a little heated when I told him his diagnosis was ridiculous. Mad
If I could get any other unlimited ISP where I live I would leave in a heartbeat.
Thanks again.

What a useless post. Nothing quoted, and the original post appears to have
aged off of the servers. Coupled with the failure to wrap at 76
characters...time to plonk the FUDForums as a posting source.

As there is only one solution on the whole thread it seemed unnecessary to quote. Just wanted to thank JBCralle. Razz
Sorry that Norman took such an exception. Thanks for the welcome.Crying or Very Sad

You are labouring under a misapprehension. You are NOT posting to a "forum"
hosted by FUDForums, (whatever that might be), you are actually posting to a
global Usenet Newsgroup, which FUDForums leach off, passing off the postings
as coming from their users.
